visualizing philanthropy at NEU

project goal
Tell stories of impact from giving at Northeastern and humanize the donor-donee relationship. How could we visualize the ripple effect that philanthropy has for Northeastern?

team
To create the site, I worked as lead designer and front-end developer—with help from a data visualization developer and initial concepting with a data viz strategist. We worked closely with the Director of Donor Relations at Northeastern, Charlotte.

process
Charlotte had many heartwarming stories of students and professors whose lives were enriched by the philanthropy of many donors. Her team team collected all the "data" to bring those stories to life—quotes from thank you letters to mentor relationships... We went through many iterations of data and design to tell these stories at varying levels of impact, from a macro view (the entire network) and a micro view (a singular person's narrative).

learning
This project was both a website and an interactive experience at the event to celebrate the end of Northeastern's "empower" fundraising campaign. While we wanted attendees to see the ripple effect they caused with their donation, we focused more on larger donations and organizations who weren't present.
